First Things First: Why I Started a Travel Blog

Hi everyone!  This is my first ‘Travel Diary‘ post on my global travel blog, Modern Mix Travel.  I thought it would be appropriate to start off with an introduction to my blogging journey and explain why I started a travel blog.

Blogging is nothing new to me. In fact, being a blogger is something I’ve identified with for nearly ten years! In my hometown of Vancouver, Canada, I have been blogging for ModernMixVancouver.com since 2008.

By being at the right place at the right time in my city, I happened to “be in the know” about new restaurant openings, sample sales and new club openings. I didn’t know who to share this information with, so I started putting it on a blog.  I named it Modern Mix Vancouver, a play on the term “Marketing Mix” which a business school term referencing a combination of factors (product, price, placement, promotion) controlled by a company to influence consumers to purchase its goods or services.

When I started my blogging journey, I caught social media during a time when it was just starting to explode with brands. Facebook started in 2004, Twitter in 2006. Foursquare, Pinterest, Instagram and Snapchat weren’t even around yet! All of these new and social platforms make sharing information easier, and because of these tools, the opportunity to be an “influencer” is now more accessible than ever before.

For me, blogging has always been about sharing my experiences, and supporting local where possible. It brings me great joy to recommend a destination, activity, or experience, and for someone to follow through with my suggestion.

Through that same burst of social media activity, travel was becoming more accessible than ever. Platforms like Trip Advisor, Google Maps, Booking.com, and AirBnB, all made travel more accessible, affordable, and appealing.  Visually stunning photography, displayed on social media through visual platforms like Pinterest or Instagram organically marketed tourism destinations.

Despite being a full-time student or a full-time 9-to-5 young working professional since the start of my blogging journey, I’ve managed to travel often.   I’ve been to 37 countries — and am still counting!  Every vacation day I took throughout my career, was spent in a different country.  You can read more about my travel story, but in short, writing about my experiences abroad, was second-nature to me, in the same way I share local experiences with my readers through Modern Mix Vancouver.   In fact, I’ve been documenting my travels for years – you can see posts dating back to 2014 (about my travel to Bolivia) on this ‘new’ blog.

As my writing about my global travels was met with the same passion I had for sharing my local, Vancouver stories, it only made sense to officially start ModernMixTravel.com.

Thank you so much for reading my first travel diary post.  Many, many, more entries coming soon!
