Happy new year! The beginning of a new year is always the best time to make a travel wishlist for the upcoming year, but it seems like there’s never enough vacation days in a year to cross everything off our list. In 2018, however, I can finally make my travel wishlist a reality because my boyfriend and I have left/are leaving our full time jobs and will be taking off on a Round-The-World trip for nine months!
Here’s my personal list of top 5 places to travel in 2018 that I’m hoping to hit up as we go on our ‘World Tour’.
Nicaragua (Central America)
Nicaragua is the first destination on our Round The World trip! It’s a cheap and relatively safe up-and-coming destination, with activities and attractions that are a good mix between city and beach, with hot weather year round. There are lots of volcanos in Nicaragua, which makes for an interesting landscape, with one-of-a-kind activities like Volcano Boarding. It’s one of the most affordable countries in Central America, so we can stay there and take our time, and won’t be over spending in our first weeks of travel. We’ve already booked our first three nights accommodations there, and it was only $28/night.
Nicaragua is also a good country to begin our travels South through Central America. After Nicaragua, many travellers will bus onwards to Costa Rica, then Panama…and we hope to do the same.
Colombia (South America)
Colombia has a turbulent history but it seems to be cleaning up for tourism. Similar to Nicaragua, it’s an affordable destination with beautiful, lush landscapes and a good mix of cultural and outdoor activities. Colombia is also one of the largest coffee producers in the world, and it’d be awesome to learn more about this industry straight from the source. I’d also love to visit Cartehegna, a colourful and photogenic Caribbean beachside town popular for vacationers looking to get some sand and sun.
Brightly coloured neighbourhoods, camel riding, busy markets, and Moroccan food (like cous cous and tagine) all sound super appealing to me. Just a short plane or boat ride from Europe, Morocco would be our first entrance into Africa. CHECK, another continent off the list…only one left to go (Antarctica) before I’ve visited all of them!
We’ve been watching way too many mountaineering documentaries on Netflix. My boyfriend has the Everest Basecamp Hike on his travel wishlist. I’m most nervous about this country because it seems like a destination for hardcore outdoor enthusiasts with challenges of high altitude, a harsh climate, and mountainous terrain. Going to Nepal would definitely be a bit out of my comfort zone — possibly because I haven’t set foot anywhere near this region before — I think we’ll have a better idea closer to the time about how feasible visiting this country is.
New Zealand (Oceania)
Being from Vancouver, it’s no surprise that scenic countries with beautiful, natural attractions would be appealing to us. We’ve heard to dedicate at least a month to exploring New Zealand’s two islands. Similar to Iceland, I think this would be a great (and safe) country to do a road trip in. I went to New Zealand before when I was 10 years old to visit my aunt. Of course, twenty years later, my experience of this country will be very different.
